Any advice for an American Girl dating a Vietnamese Boy?

We were both born and raised in America. We're both greeks in college, which is where we met. I'm a art History Major, he's in Business Admin. Both products of private school. Both a little strong, characterwise. He has met my parents, somewhat affluent from the baby boomer generation: uptight and conservative from the east coast, but were surprisingly receptive to my sweetheart of a boyfriend. They weren't open to him at first, but now, they like him more than my ex, and pretty much residual suitors buzzing around, (all of whom tower over my 5'6'; boyfriend, by a good half foot or so.lol)

All my sorority sisters think that he's a great catch. And even if the top of his head is eyelevel to me, he has a tall character. He makes me so happy, and safe, and feel so special, and there's really nothing that I want more than to do the same for him.

So with all that said, His parents are flying in from Seattle in 3 days, and I want to make a good impression. We've been together for almost 2 years now, and my parents see him weekly... but I've never met his parents. I don't want to do or say something demeaning or ignorant, or disrespectful. From what I've heard here and there, English is not their first language, but his father is an Ivy league grad. His mom is a homemaker who took care of her son and daughter. I don't know how traditional they are, but I do know that his dad really wants him to marry a Vietnamese girl. I don't think we're thinking about the marriage route just yet (though I wouldn't mind one bit, except we still have to graduate) but I at least want to know what to do and what not to do when I finally meet the parents of the man I love. My roommate's Chinese, and she says that in her culture, they don't hug, but they bow instead. I wasn't raised like that at all. I was raised with hugs as a salutation.

I know I might sound a little ignorant, or stupid, but do I refrain from hugging? Should I at least learn how to say ';please'; and ';thank you';? I'm really stressing over this. Help please?Any advice for an American Girl dating a Vietnamese Boy?
This is a crazy thought but try talking to your boyfriend. He knows them the best and what is accepted in his houselhold. And his parents expectations.

I'm Vietnamese and yes, most traditional Viet parents would rather their children marry someone Viet also. My parents aren't like most traditional Vietnamese at all, however when I was little and I visited my relatives, they'd make me put my arms together (I can't really describe it lol) and bow. I don't know if Vietnamese people these days still do that, but you could ask your boyfriend. Just use common courtesy (please, thank you, yes ma'am/sir) and you should be fine. =)

PS: Don't stress over it or try too hard to impress them!
well im an australian girl and my hubby is vietnamese, like wise with his parenrs they wanted him 2 have a viet girl, but once they met me and seen i loved him, lets jst say they r happy he married me. we still do have quiet diff cultural diversities but learn 2 adapt... goodluck , love light n peace 2u xxx
i think when you meet them you should say ';chao bac'; or something like that, or use chao chu and chao cho for younger elders.in vietnamese it is very respectful when you greet someones parents that way. plus theyll probably like it that you took your time to learn something vietnamese.

  • Any advice for me on how to try to get with a girl that i like?

really importantAny advice for me on how to try to get with a girl that i like?
i am now married but i dated for 10 years. i found the things that work the most our 1. when she is speaking listen to her. 2. don't brag about yourself to try to bring yourself up. if she's interested in you she will ask it this will give you something to talk about later. 3. ask a lot of quiestions about her family. most girls love that. 4. if your in school offer to carry her books for her. 5. if she finds you attractive and trusts you then you got a good chance.Any advice for me on how to try to get with a girl that i like?
Do nice things for me. Lend an ear if she needs to talk, compliment her, ask her out on a date...
Be yourself be honest and listen to her , ask questions about her and give honest replys.
everyone always gives really cheesey answers or really perverted answers to the this question. just ask her out with confidence and she wont say no.
Get involve with her. Do things that she likes to do. Ask her questions. See what she likes and envolve your questions around the things she likes. First make her feel comfortable around you and become friends. Flirt with her a little bit so that will set you aside from friends too. But yeah.. tell her that you like her and then see what she thinks of this situation.

Relationship Advice ( Falling for a girl ) but then she says she needs space?

Hey people just need a little help, pretty much to sum everything up in nut shell, i have been seeing this girl for about 2 months, we both go to school together but we are in opposite careers, we started to talk around the 3 day of school, then we started to hang out for a bit and then started to date/seeing each other each, all of a sudden last week she started to get distance, but reason for this she had to take some medication for her bacterial infection which the side effects are mood swings, which is not that big of a problem, the beginning of this week she states that she needs some space to think about her problems, now i m not going in depth but 1 big issue is that, her past relationships no guy has really treated her good, now that she has met me she says no guy has ever treated her like i have ( pretty much willing to listen to her problems, help her with her problems, willing to do things for her, telling her to call me anytime if anything goes wrong, be there for her and pretty much that's it, at the sametime she also said that she does not want to get hurt again, but she says that she's falling for me so much and i feel the same also, but with all her saying these stuff 1 month in and then all of a sudden she needs space, makes no sense for me what so ever, also this one guy that is her ex that she was seeing seems to be back in the picture but he has his own issues to deal with, and is placing blame on her for his dead mother, i just need some advice right now, cause im falling for this girl almost everyday and it kills us both at school that she said to me that she needs space but i can see it in her eyes that she stills wants us to be together..Relationship Advice ( Falling for a girl ) but then she says she needs space?
because she sees you so great she prob is fearful of losing you. She prob has been through enough heartbreaks and the needing space is because she probably needs to stop getting freaked out that you will leave. if shes telling you those things they are prob true, and shes prob trying to tell you shes not used to it and shes scared you will leave. talk to her about it. ask her if shes scared you'll leave, and promise, only if its true that you won't. make her see it. goodluck.Relationship Advice ( Falling for a girl ) but then she says she needs space?
You need to run as fast as you can. When she needs distance, you are history - especially with this ex in the picture. It's the old ';bad boy syndrome';. Girls like her can't stay away from the troubled guys that need help and her thoughts are that she's going to save him even though he'll pull her down first. Forget what her eyes say. She may want you but her low self-esteem will never let her have you. You're gonna get hurt.

Many men take on the role of stepdad every year. Unfortunately, far to many fail. I was raised by my stepfather. Here's something I wrote about him for Dear Abby.

As for whether you SHOULD is another matter.

I recommend that all men, and women, who are considering being a stepparent take the time to answer a series of questions produced by a professor at the U of Missouri in Columbia. It's a stepparent work sheet. You answer the questions and review your answers using their guide. You can find it in the file section of Dads House in Yahoo Groups.

Any advice for dating a girl who has child to another man?
u can't change the situation but u can change your perspective towards it. so change how u see the situation. i don't see any reason for u to worry she has no feelings towards the kids father that makes it so much easier for u. u r probably feeling jealous of the kid or the fact that another man gave her a baby. not much advice we can give u on how to feel but just try to look at it in a different light.
she might just like have ing sex with men, i would make sure that you wear your comdom, so you don't become the next hated guy who knocked her up
Too many women do this: get pregnant by the sexy dude who's great on the dance floor and has a 'bad' reputation, then 'grow up', 'settle down' i.e. stop being promiscuous, and seek a good, reliable man as husband material. They expect him to take on the job of raising another man's child without any consideration that men don't like this and typically want children of their own.

In nature there are many species the male of which would summarily kill the infant/s and impregnant the female himself so your feelings of unease, while primitive, are as natural as jealousy, lust, or any other emotional response.

Personally, I wouldn't raise another man's child on principle. The father has a parental duty - and if the mother chose an unreliable man that's her problem. She made the bed - she can lie in it.

Another reason I'd never so much as date a single mother is that you're guaranteed to come second in her life behind the kid. That'd be cool if it was *your* kid but you'll never be comfortable when it isn't.

Furthermore, she'll never be *your* woman - you'll have to share her with 'him' for the rest of your life. He'll always have rights to visit his child; she - and thus YOU - will always have to accomodate 'him' every month. His shadow will be there as a constant reminder that 'your' woman was with him before you, and bore his child, and that HIS flesh and blood is being fed, and clothed, and protected, and raised by you - you're doing the hard work and his genes will live on.

Not for me. Is it for you?

Dating advice 101...dating a girl, feel like just telling her what's up...help?

I'm 22, I've always been the outside guy for girls in relationships, and very casually dated, for various reasons. Anyways. Haven't had a relationship in a really long time, it'd be nice, what can I say, and this girl I believe likes me that I've been dating for a few weeks is driving me F*@%ng crazy. She just got out of a yearlong relationship and all, and I really just want to say what I feel, but anyone and everyone knows you don't talk about your emotions with a girl you're dating...gotta be mystery, obviously. But at the same time, would it hurt to just say me true feelings in a Rico Suave sort of way?Dating advice 101...dating a girl, feel like just telling her what's up...help?
For real? Honest communication is the foundation for lasting relationships, Hollywood and the media have brainwashed our culture into thinking that drama filled relationships are normal and even exciting. Having ';mystery'; is nothing compared to the bond and closeness that comes from being completely open and honest with a loved one. Granted your relationship is fairly new, you should talk to her about where you want this relationship to go, and express your true feelings. A relationship that has secrets always ends badly.Dating advice 101...dating a girl, feel like just telling her what's up...help?
i wud say tell her straight out how u feel..girls always like it wen guys are upfront about their feelings..do u feel like she wud want u as a bf as well n if u think she wud then u shud make the move because girls dont wanna seem easy n guys should make the move so u should do it n treat her n a likable way dont give her the wrong impression that u might just want her to mess round or stuff...n maybe give her a call...
if the chick is younger than 25, then you better make sure you stay mysterious

older chicks can appreciate when a man is man enough to open up a LITTLE (only a little) but younger chicks don't respond well to that

    so just stay in what rappers call ';pimp mode';
i think you should go for it. giving it a shot wont do any harm

Dating advice needed!!! Is this girl really worth it?

Alright, I'm going out with this girl. She's got all the qualities that any guy would want in someone. She's got a great career, intelligent, graduated from a good school, outgoing, and attractive. The only problem is.....I CAN'T SEEM TO FIGURE HER OUT!!

In a nutshell she's beautiful to look at, fascinating in some ways, but puzzling. I tend to be more confused each time we go out (then again, a lot of things confuse me). She'll be chatty on the phone then hardly give a word in person. She'll say we should get together then seem indifferent when you do. Maybe it's b/c she gets a lot of attention from men so she doesn't have to try, maybe she's indecisive, or maybe she's just playing me.

Can somebody tell me if this girl is worth dating? I'm too confused over her!Dating advice needed!!! Is this girl really worth it?
She sounds like a catch. I think she has feelings for you, and when she sees you, she is a little reserved and maybe even a little bit shy. I am like that with the person I've been dating.... we chat on the phone for maybe 2 hours (in one conversation), and then when I see him, I can't really think of anything to say for the first couple hours. Then once I'm comfortable... we are chatting up a storm. She may really like you and may just be shy at first... but I think she is definitely worth it. Chances are, if you give her some more time, you will get to know her a lot better and will be able to ';figure her out.';Dating advice needed!!! Is this girl really worth it?
The best thing I can say is when I first starting dating my boyfriend (of 2 years now) I would be way way way talkative and funny on the phone. Then in person I would be really shy and kind of awkward because I thought he was so gorgeous that it sent my mind racing and I'd get all flustered. He thought I was not interested but the fact I kept wanting to hang out kept him going. Now things are amazing.

Some girls just get really shy in person. I wouldn't give her all the attention in the world. And what's the importance of ';figuring her out'; where is the fun in that. I don't think men will ever really figure us out hahaha. If you keep thinking about her and want to see her keep dating her until it's not fun any more, it could be the best thing, and if not oh well at least you won't say what if.
